Committees and Commissions

City-Appointed Committees:

Architecture Review Board

Reviews all applications for development, redevelopment, renovations or additions to existing buildings within the overlay districts to determine whether the application is in accordance with the overlay district regulations and design requirements. This board also establishes architectural standards for uniform development consistent with in the overlay district.

Appearance & Preservation Committee

Created as an advisory committee to the City of Aberdeen in matters pertaining to the appearance and preservation of the City. Duties include encouraging civic pride and all efforts and activities in connection with the beautification of Aberdeen. The Appearance and Preservation Committee assists in the planting, maintenance and protection of plant material. Non-appointed citizens any serve on any of the sub-committees: Landscaping and Horticulture, Christmas Street, Beautification Awards, Spring/Fall Cleanup, and Fall Planting.

Board of Appeals

Hears and decides appeals where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or determination made by the administration, authorizes variance from the Zoning Ordinance and decides special exemptions.

Board of Elections

In charge if the registration of voters, nominations, and all City elections.

Board of Parks & Recreation

Created for the purpose of promoting Parks and Recreation in the City of Aberdeen and being the legal successor to the Recreation Council. The committee’s powers and duties include maintaining and operating a comprehensive public recreation program, recreation areas, and public facilities as necessary. Establish rules and regulation for these facilities.

Planning Commission

This commission is responsible for reviewing and approving or denying development site plans and promoting public interest of the plan.

Economic Development Commission

Created to identify and promote economic development in the City of Aberdeen. Duties include: encouraging the growth and retention of new and existing businesses, reviewing proposed legislation, recommend financial incentives and work with local governments. Ethics Commission

To conduct investigations, hear and determine complaints filed by any persons alleging violation or possible violations and render advisory opinions as to the applicability of the provisions of the code of ethics.

Heritage Trust Committee

Established for the purpose of preserving, structures and districts that have historical significance; to promote preservation and appreciation of these sites, structures and districts for the education of the Aberdeen community. Many opportunities exist to advance the vision of historic preservation for Aberdeen. Each passing day brings more deterioration to each of these structures. Ripken Stadium Management Board

Established for the purpose of managing, maintaining and operating the Ripken Stadium for City use. This management board is tasked with marketing the use of the stadium, charging and collecting fees for parties renting the stadium, as well as improving and maintaining the structure.
