Aberdeen's Recycling and Trash Collection Programs have been forerunner's in the State of Maryland for a few years. In 1993, the City embarked on the Volume Based "Sticker" Trash Removal Program, which is the first in the State. In 1994, the City received the "Award of Excellence" from the Maryland Municipal League for the Sticker Program that has led to very high recycling rates as well as a fair way to distribute the charges for the Harford County imposed trash tipping (dumping) fee. In 1995, the City's Program was 1 of 3 featured at an EPA Conference about "Pay As You Throw" systems, held in Washington, D.C. Our Recycling Coordinator was a panelist at the session and saw many eager participants seeking information on volume based programs which are becoming a National trend. Containers require pre-paid Aberdeen trash stickers to cover the cost of the County imposed tipping fee. Only trash items require stickers (not yard waste or recyclables). Stickers should be placed on the bags or on the top piece of trash inside the can. In cold or rainy weather, stickers on bags should be placed around the "neck" of the bag to reduce slippage. - Maximum weight permitted for a purple 40 cent sticker is 20 lbs. - Maximum weight permitted for a yellow 80 cent sticker is 40 lbs. |
