ABERDEEN MIDDLE SCHOOL STUDENTS CREATE WEBPAGE

"Aberdeen Kids of the Future" is a new addition to the city's website that made its debut on the world-wide-web last April.

The website was created, designed, and written by a group of middle school students who also are members of the Maryland 21st Century Learning Center. The students worked under the direction of Aberdeen Middle School Teacher, Mrs. Nitrease Quickley.

Twice a month, the students traveled to City Hall to work with city staff in creating the website. A large part of the design required the students to conduct interviews of representatives in the community so they could write articles for the site.

Since the site was new, the students were given the opportunity to be creative in its design. These students set the benchmark for future students. The students presented the website to the mayor and council last year at a city council meeting in recognition of Municipal Government Week.

Members of the Maryland Municipal League were in the audience to support the students in recognizing Municipal Government Week. The students were featured in the Sunday edition of the Baltimore Sun. You may visit "Aberdeen's Kids of the Future" at http://www.aberdeen-md.org/Kids%Page/

Members of the Aberdeen High School Varsity Football team attended a city council meeting and were publicly recognized for defeating Potomac High School from Prince George's County to win the State Class 2-A Football Title. The council presented the team with a Certificate of Recognition extending their expression of pride in the team's accomplishments and their appreciation for the fine publicity they brought to the community through good sportsmanship and inspired teamwork.

ATTENTION JUVENILE DRIVERS

Juvenile Driver Parent Notification Program to be initiated by Aberdeen Police Department
The Aberdeen Police Department announced that it is joining with the Maryland State Police in initiating a Juvenile Driver Parent Notification Program beginning February 1, 2004. Recognizing that the leading cause of death among people 16-20 years of age, nationwide, is motor vehicle accidents, the program is aimed at correcting inappropriate driving behavior in that age group through effective law enforcement and parental involvement.

The program will work in the following manner:

Whenever a juvenile motor vehicle operator is stopped for a moving violation, seatbelt violation, a violation of their provisional license, or is the at fault party in a motor vehicle accident, a police officer will attempt to immediately contact the legal guardian of the juvenile and explain the circumstances surrounding the incident. If a telephone contact cannot be made, a letter will be sent to the legal guardian of the juvenile advising them of the incident, date, time, location, other persons present, etc, and requesting that they become involved in correcting the behavior that precipitated the contact.

The IronBirds

The IronBirds have enjoyed two consecutive sold-out seasons at Ripken Stadium, averaging over 6,000 fans per game, a figure which puts the club among the elite in all of minor league baseball.

ABERDEEN GRAPEVINE - JANUARY 2003

2003 New Year's Resolution!

Boost Your Personal Productivity

You can take advantage of the "New Year" by resolving to become even more productive. These simple but effective tips can help put you at the head of any class.

  • Make the most of your time.
Managing time poorly can cause you stress later on, when you discover that you haven't allotted yourself enough time to complete an assignment. Plan your morning the night before. This will set the tone for the rest of the day.
  • Know your power peaks and valleys.
Schedule your most difficult work for the period when you are rested and alert. Tackle easier tasks when you know your energy is low; for example, immediately after a meal.
  • Put items away once you are done with them.
Keeping your workspace organized is easier than you may think. You can save hours each month just by keeping items such as books, completed assignments, tools, and supplies in their proper place.
  • Use breaks wisely.
Productivity experts agree: Your brain needs a breather as much as your body needs nourishment. So relax during breaks, and return to your classroom revived.
  • Make daily goals.
Plan your work with the goal of finishing as many tasks as possible before you go home. Halfway through your day stop to evaluate your progress and tackle what is left to do. You will minimize "homework" and be in better shape at the start of each new day.
    • "Even if you are on the right track, you will get run over if you just sit there." ...Will Rogers

      STUDENTS AGAINST DRUNK DRIVERS

Members of the Aberdeen Police Department in conjunction with members of the Aberdeen High School Students Against Drunk Drivers (SADD) chapter conducted a mock auto accident scenario on May 3, 2002. The incident occurred between 10:30 AM and 12:50 PM in a grassy area adjacent to the high school building.

Prior to beginning the exercise, a brief overview was provided by Sgt. Albert Severn of the Aberdeen Police Department. The overview included statistical information and the dynamics of an alcohol related automobile accident.

Members of the SADD chapter, acting as victims, were in wrecked autos while marked Aberdeen Police units arrived on the scene to render aid and initiate an investigation. One of the vehicle "operators" submitted to field sobriety tests, and that individual was arrested and taken away in handcuffs. As this "crash" resulted in a fatality, personnel from Tarring-Cargo Funeral Home arrived to remove the "deceased." Finally, Cullum's Auto Salvage (who donated the wrecked autos) came to the scene to remove the wrecks.

At the conclusion of the exercise the participants engaged in a brief review of the incident.

      SCHOOL RESOURCE OFFICER

The Aberdeen Police Department received funding through a federal grant to designate a police officer, Officer Marilyn Dudley, as a School Resource Officer for the Aberdeen High and Middle Schools. Officer Dudley dedicates 75% of her time worked (per year), as required by the grant, to the assigned schools. She works closely with the school's administration and staff, helping them with discipline related and criminal issues. Officer Dudley also provides training regarding law issues.

INNAUGURAL SEASON IS A HUGE SUCCESS!

Described as an intimate, family friendly ballpark, where ticket prices are affordable, parking is free, lines are short, and every seat has a good view! Ripken Stadium opened on June 18th, to a sold out, standing room only crowd. The home team, Aberdeen IronBirds, a Single A affiliate of the Baltimore Orioles began their inaugural season playing in the New York-Penn League. The IronBirds and Ripken Stadium provided residents with a summer of wholesome, family entertainment that delighted young and old alike. Baltimore Sun Architecture Critic Edward Gunts described Ripken Stadium: "It 's size and scale give it a small town flavor, but the craftsmanship and creature comforts are worthy of the big leagues. It 's a place where parents will be able to buy a hot dog and catch up with neighbors without losing sight of the game or the kids." Additionally, citizens of all ages were employed to work as ushers, groundskeepers, batboys, and concessionaires. Maybe one day we 'll have an Aberdeen High School graduate starting his career in Ripken Stadium!

THE NEXT LEVEL of the Aberdeen project at Ripken Stadium will be construction of the Ripken Youth Baseball Academy. Grading has already begun for several youth fields that will be ready for play this year.

Ripken Baseball wants to get several useable fields in place as soon as possible so their mission of growing the game of baseball can be taken to the next level. The structure of the ballpark around the fields will follow in due time after the fields are constructed and ready for use this year.

      WHO WAS CASIMIR WIDOWSKI?

Mr. Widowski, known as Cas to his friends, was a regular pool player at the Aberdeen Senior Center. In early part of 1999, Cas began creating a model of the Center -- a place he held close to his heart. As his health declined, he worked diligently trying to complete the project. He constructed the building to exact scale, inside and out. Cas built exact replicas of the information desk, dining room and craft room tables, bookshelves, a piano in the multi-purpose room, and a pool table complete with balls, rack, and cues. He was meticulous with detail.

Unfortunately, Cas passed away before he could finish the structure. Subsequently, his wife donated the model to the Center. With help from many individuals, the project was completed. This was truly a team effort to accomplish such a task. The unveiling of the replica and dedication ceremony was held on April 25, 2002,as a way to thank everyone who contributed, and most of all to remember Cas, the creator of the model and a friend we will always remember with a smile.

How could I bring people together? How could I encourage them to be active in determining the future of our city?
