"To Safeguard the heritage of the city of Aberdeen, by preserving, structures and districts that have historical significance. To promote preservation and appreciation of these sites, structures and districts for the education of our community."
The Aberdeen Heritage Trust was created by a Resolution of the Aberdeen City Council on April 3, 1998. Many opportunities exist to advance the vision of historic preservation for Aberdeen. Time is not on our side. Each passing day brings more deterioration to each of these structures. Your support is crucial in order to save these and other irreplaceable reminders of our past. We invite you to join in this vision through membership in the Aberdeen Heritage Trust.
The oldest house in Aberdeen and one of the oldest in Harford County, is a home known as "Poplar Hill House", and except for its shingled exterior, stands pretty much in its original condition. Poplar Hill House has also been known as the Aquilla Hall House and the Paxton House. It is said that the house was built by Captain John Hall and was originally named Aquilla Hall for his son-in-law. Aquilla Hall, who was a leader in the Revolution, later became and extensive landowner having properties from Lapidum to the tip of Bush River neck. The house is located on a tree lined lane off Philadelphia Road (MD Rt.7), near the Aberdeen Wal Mart Store. This landmark is an integral part of the area's history and should be preserved for future generations.
Aberdeen Heritage Trust will play a key role in the preservation, restoration, education and development of our community. We will continue to encourage preservation and restoration of buildings having historical and architectural significance, and to encourage private owners of good architectural examples to preserve their own properties for posterity.
